Sainsbury is an accomplished
contemporary guitarist, especially on the 'steel-string
concert guitar'. His first solo guitar CD 'Anima' was released
in 2008. Go to the Contact/Purchase page to order a copy.
Whacky
Things
He is a leading exponent of
guitar bi-tones. "I just like the little buggers", he says...
"these tones from the other side". A bi-tone is the simultaneous
performance of both sides of any string from the fingered note (see
notation above).
His efforts for the status of
the contemporary guitar in Australia and abroad have been
substantial. He has composed much for the instrument and in 2002
and 2003 he was the
Artistic Director for the Sydney Acoustic Guitar
Festival.
The flip side of all that is
that he loves writing and performing 'acoustic surf music' (in a
style like the Morning of the Earth soundtrack) and he has a
growing repertoire in this style.
Sainsbury maintains a busy
schedule as a music educator at the Eora College, Sydney Institute.
There he enjoys teaching guitar, harmony, composition and music
publishing.
Qualifications
Sainsbury studied composition
firstly with Roger Pell in his home town of Avoca Beach, and later
at the Northern Rivers College of Advanced Education (NRCAE)
Lismore, with Richard Mills and James Penberthy. He graduated with
a Diploma in Music Composition with Distinction (and the
College Medal) in 1986 and a BA in 1988. In 1991 he
gained a Graduate Diploma of Education and much later earned a MMus
(Composition) degree from Sydney Conservatorium of
Music (2001).
In 1987 he attended the Aspen
School of Contemporary Music where he participated in master
classes with American composer Bernard Rands and others. He has
participated in workshops with many composer/arranger greats
including Ward Swingle (Swingle Singers) and Russell Garcia
(Hollywood composer).
He has recently enrolled on a
PhD at Sydney University where he is enjoying studying with Anne
Boyd.
